In Vilnius, the Minister of National Defense of the Republic of Lithuania, Arvydas Anusauskas, during a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Yuriy Dzhigira, presented this concept, which includes elements of “humanitarian demining” of liberated occupied territories and “combat demining” on the line of contact with the Russians. The press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported this on December 2.
According to deputy Rustem Umerov, Russian mines and unexploded ordnance not only impede the Ukrainian counter-offensive, but also pose a danger to civilians.
Lithuania today is leading a very difficult effort in the fight against these insidious weapons. In particular, the expansion of the coalition’s work into combat zones confirms its readiness to quickly take into account the most pressing problems and find ways to solve them, Jigir said.
And the Lithuanian minister noted that for Vilnius, the implementation of this issue is the main priority in providing assistance to Ukraine for 2024-2026. Anusauskas added that 22 countries plan to join the mine action coalition.
Let us recall that in November the Swedish company Global Clearance Solutions opened a maintenance center for mine clearance machines in Ukraine. This workshop will be able to accept GCS-200 demining platforms and, if necessary, carry out their repair. Swedish experts are confident that the Center will provide opportunities to repair infrastructure, such as power poles, and restore power supplies to civilians.
