Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu continues to characterize Russian offensive actions in Ukraine as part of a so-called active defense to reduce expectations of terrorists’ ability to quickly achieve high-value targets. This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
American analysts believe that both Shoigu and dictator Vladimir Putin have already called offensive operations to capture Avdiivka “active defense.” Such misleading statements came after the first Russian mechanized offensive failed to achieve significant tactical gains in early October 2023.
Ukrainian forces have never conducted large-scale offensive operations in the Avdiivka area since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, and Avdiivka has been a known static Ukrainian defense position since 2014, ISW noted.
It is noted that talk about “active defense” allows Moscow to declare success until the Ukrainian Armed Forces achieve significant success. This may continue for quite a long time, since the Ukrainian military has not carried out and is not carrying out counter-operations in this direction.
Let us remind you that on November 29, the Russian invaders again intensified their assault operations in the Avdeevsky direction after the so-called certain lull caused by deteriorating weather. Near Avdeevka, the Russians increased the number of attacks involving infantry. In some places the enemy uses armored vehicles, but most of them are destroyed by Ukrainian defenders.
