The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate was stabbed, although he was not named in the statement, no one else was injured and the situation was quickly brought under control.
Former American police officer Derek Chauvin was stabbed in a prison in Arizona; he was convicted of killing African-American George Floyd, CNN reports.
The attack on Chauvin was confirmed by the Office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. It happened on November 24th. The prosecutor’s office reported that the convict was in stable condition.
“I am saddened to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence. He was duly convicted of the crimes he committed. And, like any person in prison, he should serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence,” Keith said Ellison.
The Washington Post reports that Chauvin was seriously injured but is expected to survive. Earlier, the media reported that the former police officer had died.
The former police officer’s attorney, Greg Erickson, told the media that he has not been able to contact his client.
In May 2020, African American George Floyd died in Minneapolis after being detained by the police. After this, the massive anti-racist Black Lives Matter protest broke out in the United States.
On April 20, 2021, a jury in Minneapolis (Minnesota) found Chauvin guilty of involuntary manslaughter. All 12 jurors found him guilty on three counts: second-degree murder (not aggravated), manslaughter and third-degree murder, which is a gross disregard for human life that recklessly results in death.
It was assumed that, due to the lack of a criminal record, Chauvin would receive from 10 to 15 years, but the US court sentenced him to 22 and a half years in prison.
