Russia lost 76 passenger aircraft – these are the consequences of Western sanctions imposed against the Russian aviation industry.

In Moscow they complain that they were “unexpectedly caught then with unexpected decisions to take away the planes.” This statement was made by Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev, the Russian publication Kommersant reports.

Sanctions against the Russian aviation industry were introduced after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. The United States of America and the European Union banned the supply of aircraft and components to Russia, and also obliged lessors to return aircraft already leased. Bloomberg writes that the number of these aircraft accounted for up to 40% of the Russian fleet. Russian aircraft were also arrested abroad.

It is noted that the largest Russian leasing company GTLK on November 16 abandoned plans announced in the summer to increase leasing rates by 30% for 37 aircraft owned by its subsidiary GTLK Europe. Most of these airliners are operated by Aeroflot, Rossiya, S7, Aurora and Yamal. However, thanks to the intervention of the Russian government, a compromise was reached.

Let us remind you that Reuters reported that Russia continues to build a plant for the production of Shahed-type attack drones. Despite progress in construction, neither the United States nor its allies have yet imposed sanctions against these construction companies.
