The main goal of the Israel Defense Forces’ operation in the Gaza Strip is the destruction of the Islamist group Hamas. An important part of its infrastructure is a network of underground tunnels hidden among civilian objects, including residential buildings, schools and hospitals.

Through these passages, militants receive smuggled weapons; the group’s leadership often hides in them, and this is where hostages can be found. Israeli troops call this underground labyrinth the Gaza Metro.
The length of the tunnels can be up to 500 km. The Israel Defense Forces said that since the start of the ground operation in the Gaza Strip, the military has already discovered and destroyed about 400 mines leading underground.
Reuters showed what Hamas tunnels discovered by the Israeli military during the operation look like.
