The naval exercises are conducted under the leadership of the Finnish Navy, Navy Recognition notes.
The naval exercise Freezing Winds 23 began in the Gulf of Finland led by the Finnish Navy. This was reported by the Navy Recognition portal.
More than 4,000 members of the Finnish Army and Air Force, representatives of the Swedish Navy, as well as other NATO allies are participating in the exercises. About 30 combat and auxiliary ships are taking part in the exercises.
The main participants in the exercise are the US Marine Corps, the British Royal Navy and several NATO maritime groups with ships from Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and France.
The exercise also included major air operations involving 16 allied aircraft.
Currently, the participating vessels are moored in the ports of Turku and Helsinki, which is an important step in Finland’s integration into NATO’s defense initiatives.
As we already wrote, on November 16, Finland decided to stop the operation of four of the nine border checkpoints at Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa, Imatra and Nirala, and from November 18 they are closed to traffic.
This is a response to the sharp increase in refugees and asylum seekers arriving from the territory of the Russian Federation. Finnish soldiers also appeared at the border.
