It is believed that the sale price was inflated due to the excitement surrounding the release of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon biopic, starring Joaquin Phoenix.
A hat worn by Napoleon Bonaparte during his reign as French Emperor has been sold at auction in Paris for 1.932 million euros. The Guardian reported this.
It was noted that the black two-horned beaver fur hat was initially estimated at 600-800 thousand euros. According to a representative of the auction house Drouot, the price reached exceeded the previous record for the emperor’s second headdress, which was sold for 1.884 million in 2014.
Pierre Ausene of the Drouot auction house said the hat being sold was distinguished by its cockade – a cluster of ribbons of different colors that Napoleon reportedly added with his own hand in 1815 while traveling in across the Mediterranean to Antibes from his exile on the Elbe, leading in a temporary return to power before his final defeat at Waterloo.
He also added that the headdress has great origins due to the fact that it remained in the possession of a family throughout the 19th century, descendants of the official Jean-Louis Noisier, who worked in Napoleon’s palace.
It should be noted that Napoleon wore his hats on one side to be seen on the battlefield. Their points are located parallel to Napoleon’s shoulders.
