As soon as he returned home, Recep Tayyip Erdogan once again came out with anti-Israeli rhetoric, which this time was mixed with criticism of German politicians, including the chancellor himself.
In his first speech after his visit to Berlin, Erdogan called on German President Franco-Walter Steinmeier during his trip to Israel to support the release of “about 10 thousand hostages from the hands of the Israelis.” By hostages, the Turkish president apparently meant Palestinians in Israeli prisons.
In addition, Erdogan clarified that his entire conversation with Chancellor Olaf Scholz was devoted to the war between Israel and Hamas. The Turkish leader said that the German government was taking the position of “imperialist crusaders.”
While Erdogan was in Germany, he was less harsh in his statements: yes, he only condemned the war in the Gaza Strip and noted that it leads to significant civilian casualties. Olaf Scholz, in turn, recalled Israel’s right to self-defense.
