It became the 34th US state to make such a decision.
With a population of 19.54 million (2018 est.), New York is the fourth most populous state in the United States.
The declaration on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor was signed by 45 UN states. According to Kislitsa, Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN, Russia is using hunger as a method of warfare, blocking Ukrainian food exports, shelling Ukrainian ports and granaries, and turning fertile Ukrainian soil into a battlefield.
He also emphasized that Ukrainian diplomacy continues to work towards international recognition of the Holodomor as genocide.
Stalin and his cronies were never brought to justice for the genocide, but “we must not allow impunity to prevail again,” Kislitsa added.
The Governor of Pennsylvania, the Senate and the House of Representatives of this state have declared November as the month of commemoration of the Holodomor – the genocide of the Ukrainian people.
Last Friday, the American state of Iowa became the 33rd state to recognize the 1932-33 Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people and proclaimed November a month of remembrance, said Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States.
