The program provided compensation for the cost of tickets on flights from Poland to Japan for Ukrainian refugees.
Japan will change its approach to supporting refugees from Ukraine. Instead of assisting with flights to this country, the government will focus on supporting those already in Japan. NHK reported this on November 11.
It is known that the government’s travel compensation program for people displaced from Ukraine to Japan will end in November. This program is valid from April 2022 and provides compensation for the cost of tickets on commercial flights from Poland to Japan for Ukrainians fleeing the war.
Over the course of time, more than 270 people have used this program, and recently fewer people have been interested. A new program will be launched in December that will focus on other aspects of helping Ukrainians.
First, people who fled conflict zones but do not formally meet Japan’s criteria for refugee status will receive government guarantees that they will be de facto treated as official refugees.
Second, the Japanese government wants to help refugees fully settle in the country. In particular, Ukrainians already in Japan will receive resident refugee status, complete a Japanese language learning program and receive job assistance.
We remind you that the European Union has extended temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine until March 4, 2025. In Germany, from 2024, social benefits for all refugees will be reduced.
