Netanyahu said he would agree to a cease-fire if Hamas released all hostages held in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes a long-term ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, because, in his opinion, it is tantamount to surrendering to Hamas. He said this in an interview with ABC News.
When asked if Netanyahu would agree to US President Joe Biden’s call for humanitarian pauses, he said:
“There will be no ceasefire, no general ceasefire in Gaza without the release of our hostages. As for small tactical pauses – an hour here, an hour there. We had them before, I assume that we will check the situation in order to allow import goods, humanitarian supplies, or so that our hostages, individual hostages, can leave. But I don’t think there will be a general ceasefire.”
Netanyahu said he would agree to a cease-fire if Hamas released all hostages held in Gaza.
“For this to happen, there must be a ceasefire, and we are waiting for it to happen,” he said.
According to the prime minister, Israel has some information on the whereabouts of the hostages.
Netanyahu added that Israel will have “shared responsibility for security” in Gaza for an indefinite period after the end of the war. He believes that the Gaza Strip should be governed by people who do not want to continue the path of Hamas.
We remind you that the US authorities do not support a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, but they are in favor of humanitarian pauses.
