After negotiations with Turkey, the US Secretary of State expressed confidence in Sweden’s imminent entry into NATO.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is confident of progress towards the approval of Sweden’s entry into NATO. He said this after negotiations with his Turkish counterpart in Ankara on Monday, November 6, the press service of the State Department reports.
According to the Secretary of State, the United States is “very encouraged by the fact that the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, signed the ratification protocols for Sweden’s accession to NATO and sent them to the parliament.”
“And I am convinced that we will see further movement in this direction. I think there is a joint commitment to ensure the completion of the process and the entry of Sweden into the Alliance. Turkey has this commitment, we have it, and I hope that we witness its execution.” Blinken said.
We remind you that in 2022 Sweden submitted its application to join NATO. Since then, it has been adopted by all NATO member countries except Hungary and Turkey. On October 23, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a protocol on Sweden’s accession to NATO.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Sweden has fulfilled all the conditions for obtaining full membership in the Alliance. In his opinion, the country should become a member of NATO “no later than” the meeting of foreign ministers of the Alliance scheduled for November 28-29.
