The Russian Federation is trying to expand its military presence in the Mediterranean region by creating its naval base in Libya.
Russia plans to build a naval base in eastern Libya to create a foothold on Europe’s southern border and monitor the European Union. Bloomberg wrote this on Sunday, November 5.
According to the American publication, Russia and Libya began working on a military cooperation agreement after General Khalifa Haftar’s visit to Moscow, where on September 28 he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Haftar is reportedly ready to surrender some air bases to the Russian Federation and give Russian warships the right to be permanently based in the port of Tobruk.
The publication indicates that Haftar controls many large oil facilities in the country, which holds approximately 40% of Africa’s oil reserves. It requires air defense systems, training fighter pilots and special forces to counter government forces. In return, it was promised to hand over several air bases, where the Wagner PMC paramilitary formations are currently based, to be given over for the deployment of Russian troops.
“In this case, Russian ships will continue to be several hundred kilometers from Greece and Italy, and this will allow Russia to spy on the entire European Union,” said former US special envoy to Libya Jonathan Weiner in the publication.
According to him, the United States takes the threat seriously and has so far tried to distance the Russian Federation from the Mediterranean region.
Members of the European Parliament have proposed transferring weapons and military equipment seized from Libya to Ukraine.
The launch of missiles by Russian invaders on their ships in the Mediterranean by NATO countries is unlikely.
