A new politician may replace Victoria Nuland. The current Deputy Secretary of State of the US is in office from 2021.
US President Joe Biden submitted to the Senate the nomination of Kurt Campbell for the post of deputy head of the US State Department. She can replace Victoria Nuland. This was announced on Wednesday, November 1, by the White House press service.
Earlier, the American media wrote that Campbell was involved in all US policy decisions in Asia.
Kurt Campbell currently serves as Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs at the National Security Council. He was previously Chairman and CEO of a strategy advisory and wealth management company in Asia and the Pacific. From 2009 to 2013, he also served as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
Note that the announcement of Campbell’s appointment comes two weeks before Biden’s possible meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in San Francisco.
The White House release noted that Nuland will be in office through 2021.
It is known that from 2013 to 2017 he also worked as the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs. In 2011, he was appointed press secretary of the US State Department. Previously, he worked at the State Department on issues related to Russia. In addition, in 1991-1993 he worked at the US Embassy in Moscow.
Nuland believes that Ukraine’s allies should prepare for a long confrontation with the Russian Federation.
