US House Republicans have chosen Mike Johnson as their next candidate for Speaker.
The Republican majority in the US House of Representatives secretly elected Congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana as the party’s sole candidate for speaker. This was reported by The Hill, citing sources in the Republican Party.
Thus, Johnson became the fourth majority candidate to receive the support of the party conference.
On Wednesday, October 25, Republicans are expected to hold an internal party test vote to determine whether a candidate receives the minimum required support of 217 votes.
51-year-old Mike Johnson has been serving as the vice leader of the Republican Party in the lower house of the US Congress since 2021. He previously served as the head of the Republican Study Committee, the largest conservative caucus in the House of Representatives.
We remind you that after the unsuccessful attempts of Trumpist Jim Jordan on October 20 to apply for the position of speaker, the Republican majority nominated Tom Emmer as the candidate on October 24. After it became clear that he was not gaining the necessary support, the Republicans began the procedure for choosing a candidate in a new way.
As you know, on October 3, the House of Representatives voted for the early resignation of Republican Kevin McCarthy from the position of Speaker. Until the lower house of the US Congress elects a speaker, it cannot agree on a budget or pass laws, including those related to providing aid to Ukraine.
