We have a huge shortage of ammunition not only in Ukraine, but throughout the world… We understand that we must produce them here in Ukraine, because they have run out all over the world, they are exhausted. All trains are empty,” Smigal said in an interview with the Financial Times.
He said the government is drawing lessons from the surge in drone production, which has risen from “a few dozen last year” to “tens of thousands” this year.
Developing an industry for the procurement of shells, artillery and air defense systems is a much more difficult task in the face of global shortages of key components and raw materials than for drones.
One of the officials told the Financial Times that Ukraine cannot quickly transform the production of shells, in particular, due to a global “shortage of gunpowder.”
