This was reported by NBC News with reference to the state police.
It is noted that the incident was the result of a series of consecutive accidents that began yesterday, October 23, at about nine in the morning local time and stretched over a distance of more than 1.5 km.
Also, some of the clashes led to a fire.
More than 25 people were taken to hospitals with injuries of varying severity, while others sought medical help on their own.
State police believe the death toll could rise as they clean up the area around the tanker that was carrying the hazardous liquid.
Once the tank is removed, first responders will be able to better assess vehicles in that immediate area. It is possible that additional fatalities could be found, police said.
The day before, drivers were warned about heavy fog on this section of the highway and urged to choose alternative routes. In addition, the National Weather Service in New Orleans reported that there were many fires in the area, including swamp fires.
The weather service said thick fog and smoke created a “super fog” that “had a major impact” on sections of interregional highways.
