Magomed Musaev allegedly became the shadow owner of the global media holding Forbes, but he officially denied this.
Russian oligarch, owner of Russian Forbes Magomed Musaev said he bought the entire Forbes global media group. He spoke about it in private conversations with partners, reports The Washington Post, citing sources.
According to the publication, in June Musaev told his partners that he was the buyer of Forbes and entered into the deal of his life. The Washington Post also claims to have access to five audio and video recordings showing Musaev talking about it.
“I just bought global Forbes,” Musaev told one of his partners, referring to Forbes Media Group, which includes the American edition of the magazine.
“You understand, when you have in your hands the key to the most powerful brand in the world, this key will give me access to anyone,” he also said.
At the same time, Musaev called businessman Austin Russell the “face” of the deal and insisted that his own involvement in it was kept quiet.
In a statement to The Post, Russell denied any involvement of Musaev or any Russian individual in the deal.
“There is not one dollar of capital from any Chinese or Russian citizen or entity, including Musaev,” Russell said.
In comments to The Post, Musaev said that any suggestion that he controlled the deal was “absolute nonsense” and a “terrible myth” and that “there was no involvement in the documents, in any written form. ” He countered that he could have told his partners he bought Forbes, but did not respond to further requests for comment on the tapes.
In May, Axios reported, citing two unnamed people, that Musaev brought Russell to the Forbes acquisition, although it did not name Musaev as an investor or buyer. Two executives familiar with the situation echoed that statement in interviews with The Post.
Forbes Russia development director Dmitry Ozman, in a commentary to RBC, said that Russian Forbes has no information about the sale of Forbes global media holding Magomed Musaev.
“I manage, in particular, the PR of Russian Forbes, internally we do not know anything about the agreement,” said Ozman, adding that Musaev did not comment on this issue in a personal conversation.
