Viktor Afzalov became the new commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) in place of Sergei Surovikin. RosSMI reported this on Friday, October 20, with links to sources.
At the end of last year, Afzalov received the rank of colonel general.
According to open data, before this Afzalov was a temporary executor of the post of head of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
Let us recall that General Surovikin, considered an ally of Wagner PMC leader Evgeniy Prigozhin, disappeared from the public sphere in June after the mercenary leader and members of his company spoke out against the Russian military leadership. Surovikin was detained and released a few days after Prigozhin died in a plane crash.
Surovikin’s biography has disappeared from the website of the Russian Ministry of Defense. His resignation from the post of commander of the Russian Military Space Forces was not officially announced; in August it was reported by the media related sources.
On September 11, Surovikin was appointed to a new position, he headed the Coordination Committee for Air Defense under the Council of Defense Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States. He was seen before in Algeria.
