China will have 500 nuclear warheads in its arsenal by 2023. It is believed that China will double this number by 2030 and will continue to develop its nuclear capabilities. This was stated in the US Department of Defense’s annual report on China, released on October 19.
It noted that Beijing continued its rapid nuclear expansion in 2022, and the Ministry of Defense estimated that by May 2023, China had more than 500 operational nuclear warheads.
It was noted that during the year China received about 100 new warheads, which exceeded the initial forecasts for the increase of the nuclear potential of the PRC.
The Pentagon estimates that by 2030 China will have more than 1,000 operational nuclear warheads, most of which will be deployed on alert.
The report also highlights China’s efforts in space exploration. China is increasing its potential and approaching the capability level of the United States. The Pentagon admits that in the future Beijing could gain an advantage and pose a threat to American satellites.
