The United States blocked a UN Security Council resolution on a humanitarian pause in the war between Israel and Hamas.
The United States has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a temporary ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas, which would allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Reuters reported this on October 18.
It was noted that 12 members of the Security Council supported the resolution, while Russia and Great Britain abstained.
“The vote on the text prepared by Brazil was postponed twice in the past few days while the United States tried to agree on a humanitarian corridor,” the material said.
According to US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States is still conducting active diplomatic work in the region.
“Yes, resolutions are important. And yes, the Council must express its position. However, we must act based on facts and by supporting direct diplomatic efforts. This will save lives. The Security Council must the right thing,” he said.
Earlier, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate humanitarian truce to free the hostages and deliver aid to the Gaza Strip.
Let’s remember that during today’s visit to Tel Aviv, US President Joe Biden announced that Israel agreed to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip from Egypt.
As you know, on October 7, Hamas militants attacked Israel and killed more than a thousand civilians. In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a military operation to destroy the group.
