China’s One Belt, One Road project is in line with Russia’s goal of building an alternative world order, Vladimir Putin said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping presented his Belt and Road project as an alternative to the US-led world order. Russian President Vladimir Putin supported this statement, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, October 18.
In a speech in Beijing marking the 10th anniversary of China’s global infrastructure project, Xi criticized unilateral sanctions, geopolitical rivalries and bloc politics. Although he did not name any countries, the remarks were clear references to US policy toward China in recent years, which Washington portrays as risk reduction but which Beijing views as an attempt to curb the growing power. this.
“As the saying goes, when you give roses to others, the fragrance remains in your hand,” Xi Jinping said. “In other words, helping others is also helping yourself. Viewing the development of others as a threat or accepting economic cooperation as a non-risk will improve one’s own life or accelerate development.”
Speaking immediately after Xi, Putin hailed the initiative as in line with Russia’s goal of building an alternative world order.
“Russia and China, like most countries in the world, share a desire for equal and mutually beneficial cooperation… while respecting the diversity of civilizations and the rights of each state to itself this model of development,” said the Russian President.
According to him, China’s One Belt, One Road initiative “fits logically with multilateral efforts to strengthen creative and constructive engagement.”
The agency points out that the statements at the opening ceremony of the Belt and Road Forum indicate the desire of China and Russia to appeal to the developing economies of the so-called Global South, which covers South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. The United States and its allies are calling on these countries to support a rules-based order that allows them to unite on issues such as supporting Ukraine against Putin’s aggression.
The Belt and Road Initiative has become a flashpoint between China and the West, and Italy – the only G7 member to sign a formal cooperation agreement with Beijing – has signaled its intention to withdraw by the end of the year. However, Xi still sees the program as attractive to developing countries that can use Chinese money and don’t have to take a stand on issues such as human rights and territorial sovereignty.
It was a rare trip abroad for Putin after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for war crimes in Ukraine in March. His visit is a show of support for the Belt and Road Initiative and highlights Moscow’s close ties with Beijing.
China has provided diplomatic and economic support to Russia, helping to soften the impact of Western sanctions on Moscow. The last time Putin visited China was for the Winter Olympics before the invasion of Ukraine. At this meeting, the two leaders agreed on a “borderless” friendship and signed several long-term agreements on energy supplies.
As you know, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin arrived in China on Tuesday, October 17, for a two-day visit.
It was previously reported that the negotiations between Putin and Xi Jinping will be held in two formats.
