Leonard Cure was released in 2020 when it emerged that he had a solid alibi. Three years after his release, a policeman stopped his car on the highway and shot him after an argument.
In the US, a police officer shot and killed a man who was wrongly convicted and spent 16 years in prison. He was recently acquitted and released, Sky News reports.
It was learned that on Monday, 53-year-old Leonard Allen Cure was driving on the highway when a police officer stopped him. At the police’s request, the man got out of the car and followed the officer’s orders until he realized he was under arrest. It was not reported why exactly they wanted to arrest him.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Cure began fighting with police and used a stun gun and a baton several times. The officer eventually drew his gun and shot the man because “he still didn’t comply.” For a few hours the man was still alive, and doctors tried to save him, but in the end he died.
In 2003, Leonard Cure, previously convicted of robbery and other crimes, reportedly received a life sentence for an armed robbery of a Florida pharmacy. But in April 2020 he was released.
At the retrial, the judge ruled that Cure had a credible alibi that had previously been overlooked. At the same time, there is no physical evidence or compelling testimony against him in the case that would link him to the crime scene.
This year, Cure received $817,000 in compensation for his wrongful conviction. Broward Florida State’s Attorney Harold F. Pryor, who described the 53-year-old as “intelligent, funny and kind,” said at the time: “Mr. Cure will pay no money to those who this or leave him, but it is a small gesture of recognition.” that Mr. was imprisoned Cure unfair.”
Since his release and rehabilitation, Cure has been involved in training prosecutors to help them “do their job as fairly and thoroughly as possible.”
The Bureau of Investigation is now conducting an independent investigation to determine the causes and circumstances of Cure’s death.
Earlier, a US court acquitted him of serving 28 years in prison. He was sentenced to life in prison for a murder he did not commit.
An American who served 40 years because of a court error will be paid $21 million.
