The nominee from the Republican Party, which has a majority in the lower house, received fewer votes than the candidate from the Democratic Party.
The US House of Representatives on Tuesday, October 17, failed to elect a speaker in the first attempt. At the same time, the candidate from the Republican Party, which has a majority in the lower house, received fewer votes than the candidate from the Democrats, reports Ukrinform.
It was noted that Ohio Republican Jim Jordan received 200 votes from fellow party members, while Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries got the support of all 212 of his fellow party members.
Another 20 Republicans voted for other candidates, including former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
After the vote, members of the House of Representatives went into recess. It is possible that in the near future there will be a new attempt to choose a speaker.
It was earlier reported that members of the US Republican Party have elected Congressman Jim Jordan as the candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives. He has long been a critic of American aid to Ukraine. He is also leading efforts to impeach US President Joe Biden.
Let’s remember that on October 3, the Speaker of Congress Kevin McCarthy was fired early in the United States. The process to oust McCarthy was initiated by his former party colleague, Republican Matt Gaetz. He accused the speaker of “theoretically concluding a secret agreement with the president to support Ukraine.”
