Next, law enforcement officers and other departments will analyze the route and operation history of the vessels.

Earlier, the country’s president said that the leak was likely due to “external activities.” A number of media outlets suspect the Russian Federation.

In addition, today it became known that Sweden discovered damage to the undersea telecommunications cable laid to Estonia. Most likely, this happened when the Balticconnector gas pipeline was damaged.

This is not a complete cable break, but partial damage, says Expressen. se Minister of Defense.

They don’t yet know what exactly led to the incident.

Earlier, the country’s president said that the leak was likely due to “external activities.” A number of media outlets suspect the Russian Federation.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo previously announced that the Balticconnector gas pipeline was damaged in Finland and the country’s leadership does not rule out a “Russian trace.” He suggested the leak was due to “external activity.”

The political and military leadership of Finland suggests that Russia could be behind the incident, the Finnish newspaper Iltalehti reports, citing its own sources.

Balticconnector is a gas pipeline that transports natural gas between Finland and Estonia. It began operating in 2020, when Finland refused Russian gas amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finnish energy company Gasum announced that it would supply natural gas to its consumers from other sources through the Balticconnector pipeline.

In April 2023, public broadcasters in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland aired an investigation alleging that Russian surveillance ships were likely preparing for sabotage against energy and infrastructure facilities in the Baltic and North Seas.

Finnish intelligence services have already stated that the incident on the Balticconnector gas pipeline poses a threat to the country’s national security. The Finnish Defense Forces are investigating.
