This was reported by the press service of the North Atlantic Alliance.
These exercises have been held annually for more than 10 years. They will be attended by 13 NATO countries and up to 60 aircraft of various types, including modern fighters and American B-52 bombers flying from the United States.
Conventional jets and surveillance and refueling aircraft will also be deployed.
Every year, a different NATO member hosts Steadfast Noon. The training flights will take place over Italy, Croatia and the Mediterranean Sea, the statement said.
The exercise involves fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads, but without live bombs. The exercises will continue until October 26.
The exercises are not tied to current world events, and the bulk of the training is carried out at least 1,000 kilometers from the borders of Russia, the report notes.
NATO’s Strategic Concept clearly states that “the fundamental purpose of NATO’s nuclear capabilities is to preserve peace, prevent coercion and deter aggression.” It notes that “as long as nuclear weapons exist, NATO will remain a nuclear alliance,” the NATO press service adds.
