The organization calls the situation “absolutely unprecedented” and Israel’s siege of the Gaza Strip as “a terrible collective punishment.”
About a million people in the Gaza Strip were displaced during the week of Hamas’ war against Israel. This was announced on Sunday, October 15, by the Commissioner General of the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini.
“At least a million people have been forced to flee their homes in just one week. The river of people continues to flow south. There is no safe place in Gaza,” Lazzarini said.
According to him, 400 thousand displaced people are in UNRWA schools and buildings, but most of these structures cannot serve as shelters.
“The UN agency itself has already lost 14 employees,” the commissioner added.
He also said the organization was working in the Gaza Strip “on the brink.”
“UNRWA is the largest United Nations presence in the Gaza Strip and we are on the brink of collapse,” warned a UN spokesman.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised after a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi that the Rafah crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt will “open.”
We remind you that there are almost 260 Ukrainians in the Gaza Strip, diplomats are working together with partners to evacuate them.
