He opposes increasing aid to Ukraine. In addition, he is called a supporter of former American President Donald Trump.
These developments come after former Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed from office. He reached an agreement with the White House to unblock the government and promise to introduce a bill to help Ukraine.
Jordan, whose candidacy was nominated by Republicans, is even tougher on Ukraine.
He was the first head of the Freedom Caucus, a conservative pro-Trump group in the House of Representatives.
The 59-year-old Republican congressman from Ohio chairs the House Judiciary Committee and has led investigations into the Biden administration.
DW writes that Jordan has repeatedly voted against increasing military aid to Ukraine, saying that “the main problem in the minds of Americans is not Ukraine, but the situation at the US borders and crime on the streets.”
The congressman was also accused of actively participating in the ex-president’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 elections. And finally, Jordan is leading the task force to impeach President Biden.
It is unclear whether Jordan will be selected.
After he won the nomination for speaker, Republicans held another test vote to see how many in the room were willing to vote for Jordan.
152 were in favor and 55 were against. According to American media, Jordan can now afford to lose only four votes.
