Former US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker named four aspects of Ukraine’s energy security for the winter period, the very first of which is containing Russia.

According to the diplomat, the issue of energy security should be considered in the context of the overall security of Ukraine, therefore Washington’s defense support for Kyiv will continue and remain powerful.
I would highlight four aspects of Ukraine’s energy security for this winter period. The first thing that needs to be done is to contain Russian attacks, because deterrence is a combination of many aspects, Volker said during an online appearance during the Kyiv International Economic Forum.
He recalled that several weeks ago Ukraine demonstrated the ability to hit Russia’s energy network, when several settlements were left without electricity in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation as a result of a drone attack on September 26.
This demonstrates to the Russians that if they try to do in Ukraine what they did last winter, they can expect Ukraine to launch attacks on the Russian power grid, and this will affect the Russian population. Nobody wants this, but it is important to show Russia that this can happen. This may be a deterrent, the diplomat is convinced.
Secondly, it is necessary to increase the protection of Ukrainian energy facilities, Volker said. The third aspect he named is the maximum dispersal of the energy production and distribution system and the ability to combine different energy sources to reduce the impact of future Russian attacks on the energy system.
The fourth factor is the integration of Ukraine into the European Union, which will provide support in the field of physical protection, as well as international support for the further work of the energy sector and the economy.
