Ukraine in 2022 received the status of a candidate for accession to the European Union. After that, conditions were set for our country to become a member of the bloc.
Ukraine may join the European Union as early as 2030. The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced this on Tuesday, October 3, Spiegel reports.
“Ukraine can join the European Union in 2030 if it does its homework. Ukraine and other candidate countries must carry out reforms, fight corruption and meet the requirements for modernization of the law. It is also necessary of the EU to clearly understand what we want to achieve together, what our priorities are and what we want to spend. And we need to speed up our decision-making processes,” said Michel.
He said that integration was not an easy process. But he said the EU could not waste any more time.
“A prosperous and safe Ukraine is in our interests. Their opposition to Russia has shown that Ukraine belongs to the EU. And soon, and not someday. In turn, the EU will also prove that it is capable of geopolitical measures,” added the head of the European Council.
Let’s remember that EU heads of state and government will discuss on Friday in Granada, Spain, Ukraine’s intentions to start EU accession negotiations.
The EU is likely to announce the start of Ukraine’s membership negotiations in December this year.
We remind you that, according to Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky, negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU may begin this fall or early next year.
