Additional aid allocations to Ukraine require an effective vote in Congress. If the House of Representatives is effectively blocked due to the absence of the Speaker, it is impossible to make such a decision.
The House of Representatives of the United States of America has decided to resign the Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy. 216 representatives voted, 210 against. CNN reported this on Tuesday, October 3.
It has been reported that the process to oust McCarthy was initiated by his former party colleague, Republican Matt Gaetz. He accused the speaker of “theoretically concluding a secret agreement with President Joseph Biden to support Ukraine.”
Representative Steve Womack, an Arkansas Republican, read the vote and said, “The office of Speaker of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant.”
The speaker’s post will be temporarily filled by a congressman chosen from a list of alternatives McCarthy introduced earlier this year.
It is known that McCarthy supported a bill to fund the US government until November 17, but did not introduce any of the spending cuts or border security changes called for by his Republican colleagues.
The House has never removed a speaker before. The only time the House of Representatives voted to remove a speaker was in 1910, when Republican Joe Kennaugh retained his position.
US President Joe Biden is pushing Republicans in Congress to support a bill that would provide more aid to Ukraine. He said he was “tired” of the political crisis, which almost led to a government shutdown.
