Azerbaijan’s border guards detained the former Minister of Defense of Nagorno-Karabakh, Lieutenant General Levon Mnatsakanyan. The Armenian media wrote about it.
It was reported that the arrest took place at the Lachin checkpoint when the former military commander attempted to enter the Armenian city of Goris from Karabakh.
Levon Mnatsakanyan served as the commander of the Defense Army and at the same time was the chairman of the military department of the unrecognized republic in 2015-2018. Later, for some time he was the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and police of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Let’s recall that on September 19, Azerbaijan announced the holding of “anti-terrorism measures” in Karabakh to “restore constitutional order.” On the same day, Baku announced the conditions for the end of the operation, including the surrender and disarmament of forces in the region. On September 20, Nagorno-Karabakh “authorities” accepted a ceasefire proposal.
Azerbaijan announced the restoration of sovereignty in Nagorno-Karabakh, and its residents, mainly ethnic Armenians, began to leave the region. The unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) will cease to exist on January 1, 2024.
