Chinese authorities are working with private companies in the country to “identify and localize critics abroad.”
The Chinese government is investing “unprecedented resources” in disinformation, censorship, and persecution of dissidents. This was stated in a statement by the US State Department on Friday, September 29.
They noted that the PRC is trying to create “convenient” narratives that favor foreign audiences.
“China is becoming more confident in its power and they believe they can advance their interests by manipulating information,” the State Department report said.
The report noted that Beijing spends billions of dollars to promote false or biased statements that stifle criticism of China’s political leadership.
In particular, the State Department indicates that Chinese state media supported and intensified pro-Kremlin or anti-NATO propaganda after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“For example, they spread Moscow’s statements about the existence of secret biological weapons production facilities in Ukraine, funded by the United States. In turn, Russia promotes PRC propaganda related to Taiwan and other interests of the PRC,” the report said.
The report also said that the Chinese government has used intimidation tactics against critics of the regime in the country.
At the same time, the report said Beijing faces serious setbacks in promoting manipulative information in democratic countries due to opposition from local media and civil society.
Let’s remember that Microsoft earlier said that a hacker group from China had breached two and a half dozen email accounts associated with government agencies in Western Europe for espionage purposes.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad signed a statement establishing a strategic partnership between China and Syria at a meeting in Hangzhou, the capital of China’s eastern Zhejiang province.
