German Interior Minister Nancy Feser will announce temporary checks at Germany’s borders with Poland and the Czech Republic to try to stem the influx of asylum seekers, a German official told POLITICO.
Feser plans to announce “temporary controls at select checkpoints” on Wednesday, the official said. The checks, the official added, will begin in the coming days.
German leaders have come under increased pressure to reduce the flow of asylum seekers entering the country, many of whom are now crossing the borders of Poland and the Czech Republic.
Some 204,000 people sought asylum in Germany during the first eight months of 2023, up 77% on the same period last year.
