The US Congress is about to vote on a massive new aid package for Ukraine.
The White House will continue to work with lawmakers of both parties in the US Congress to pass a new large-scale aid package to Ukraine. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this in a briefing on Tuesday, September 26.
“We will continue to work with members of both parties,” he said.
In this context, Karine Jean-Pierre noted that, in particular, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and Republican leader Mitch McConnell have repeatedly expressed support for additional funding for aid to Ukraine. Jean-Pierre recalled that White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan recently spoke to members of Congress and emphasized that this funding should provide support for the entire Ukrainian people fighting for freedom and democracy.
The White House representative also emphasized that aid to Ukraine also comes from allies and partners, and the United States should play a leading role in it.
“We are committed to continuing these conversations (with Congress – ed.). We are grateful for the bipartisan support we have seen, and therefore these conversations will continue,” concluded Jean- Pierre.
US State Department Speaker Matthew Miller also spoke in support of aid to Ukraine. He noted that there is now a bipartisan majority that supports extending aid to Ukraine.
“We believe it is important that Congress continue to deter and resist Russian aggression and make it clear that we will not stand by when countries try to bully their neighbors,” Miller said.
The vote is necessary to prevent a so-called “shutdown” – a partial shutdown of the US government. This situation in the US could happen on October 1 if Congress does not pass the budget issues for the next fiscal year by September 30. However, it can be avoided by passing a budget resolution that will finance the spending of government until lawmakers pass the budget law.
We remind you that Kyiv and Washington signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in ensuring the sustainability of Ukraine’s energy system, which provides for the allocation of $522 million to strengthen it.
As already written, US President Joe Biden approved a new aid package for Ukraine. It will include artillery, ammunition and anti-tank weapons.
