Before the war, Ukraine’s birth rate was one of the lowest in Europe, but now it may be the lowest in the world.
The birth rate in Ukraine in the first half of this year decreased by 28% compared to the same period before the full war. This is a record drop in the number since Ukraine’s independence, writes The Wall Street Journal.
Even before the Russian invasion, Ukraine’s birth rate was one of the lowest in Europe, but now it may be the lowest in the world.
According to a negative forecast, the population of Ukraine may decrease to 30 million in the next two decades, compared to 43 million before February 24, 2022. This conclusion was reached by a specialist from the Institute of Demography and Social Research who named MV Birds Alexander Gladun.
The birth rate in Ukraine began to decrease (by 12%) after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. However, after the start of a large-scale war, the overall birth rate decreased to 1.2. This is despite the fact that to maintain the population this number should be 2.1 children per woman.
Because of the conflict, millions of women and children were forced to leave the country, and men from 18 to 60 years old were prohibited from leaving. The situation is also aggravated by the physical separation of couples and the delay in having children.
We remind you that, according to the forecasts of scientists, no more than 35 million people will live in Ukraine in ten years, provided they return to the borders of 1991. This is an optimistic forecast; there will never be 52 million Ukrainians again.
