The country plans to halve the federal aid allocated to the regions to cover the costs of receiving and integrating refugees.
The German federal government plans to halve the state aid budget next year to cover the costs of receiving, supporting and integrating refugees. Reuters wrote this on Monday, September 25.
“Berlin will allocate a maximum of 1.7 billion euros in support for refugee costs in 2024, up from 3.75 billion euros this year,” the agency said.
A Treasury spokesman told reporters that a meeting between the federal and state governments on September 25 on these issues was fruitless ahead of planned consultations with the chancellor in November.
According to Reuters sources, the German government, in addition to reducing costs for the regions, will completely cancel its contribution to the costs of maintaining Ukrainian refugees and their integration.
After Russia invaded Ukraine, over 1 million people took refuge in Germany. By the end of June 2023, 3.26 million refugees were registered in Germany – the most in the last decade. Their support weighs heavily on the country’s cities and municipalities.
We remind you that Poland has closed its largest refugee reception center. The center was supposed to be temporary, and its closure was justified by the fact that “the number of refugees arriving in the region from Ukraine is negligible.”
As reported, the head of the European Commission proposes to extend the protection of Ukrainians in the EU.
