The first batch of armored vehicles was delivered on Saturday, September 23. It is unknown how many vehicles are already in Ukraine, but most of the Abrams will be shipped in the coming months. The United States promised to transfer 31 such tanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This was reported by The New York Times, citing two officials of the US Department of Defense.
According to media reports, these several Abrams will join the arsenal of other tanks available in the Ukrainian army. These armored vehicles could be used “to advance into Russian-controlled territory in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, where fighting has continued for months without major breakthroughs.”
The NYT also recalled that recently the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Kirill Budanov, stated that the Abrams would need to be deployed “very specifically for very specific, well-thought-out operations” so as not to lose them in vain.
President Zelensky confirmed the transfer of the first Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
Good news from Minister Umerov. “Abrams” are already in Ukraine and are preparing to strengthen our brigades. I am grateful to the allies for fulfilling the agreements! We are looking for new contracts, expanding the geography of supplies,” he wrote in Telegram.
Previously, US President Joe Biden said that Abrams tanks would arrive in Ukraine on September 25.
