In Iran, people who refuse to wear the hijab face up to 10 years in prison.

The law is expected to last three years and, depending on its effectiveness, may be introduced permanently.

In Iran, parliament passed the Hijab and Chastity Bill, which provides for penalties of up to 10 years in prison and fines for violating the Islamic dress code. Now it must be approved by the constitutional oversight body Guardian Council, after which it will become full law. The BBC reported it.

If the document is approved, the women could face prison terms of 5 to 10 years and fines of $3,651 to $7,302 for violating the law.

In addition, the bill imposes fines on those who “promote nudity” or “mock the hijab” in the media and social networks, as well as on owners of vehicles in which a female driver or passenger is not wearing a hijab or appropriate clothing.

It noted that any person who promotes the violation of the dress code “in an organized manner” or “in collaboration with foreign or hostile governments, media, groups or organizations” can also be imprisoned for 5 to 10 years.

Authorities are looking at the prospect of a 10-year prison sentence to force women and girls to return to the Islamic dress code. The law is expected to last three years and, depending on its effectiveness, may be introduced permanently.

Let’s recall that the Commission of the Iranian Parliament has previously approved tougher penalties for violating the law on forced wearing of the hijab.

As is known, the tightening of the law was the response of the country’s leadership to the protests of 2022, which appeared against the backdrop of the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini by the Iranian moral police. The woman was detained for violating the rules of wearing a hijab. The authorities violently suppressed the protests and carried out several executions.
