Kazakhstan published “a register of persons receiving money or other property from foreign states, international and foreign organizations, foreigners or stateless persons.” It was reported by Radio Liberty.
The register of “foreign agents,” as the abbreviated list, includes dozens of Kazakh human rights organizations, independent media, journalists and bloggers: the Norwegian Helsinki Committee in Kazakhstan, the representative office of the international organization Internews, the Kazakhstan Bureau for Human Rights, the organization for the protection of the press “Adil Soz”, “Wings of Freedom” Foundation, public organization “Echo”, legal entities of local publications masa.media and malim.kz, etc.
The register contains not only names, but also personal data – individual identification numbers.
Changes to the Tax Code providing for the publication of a register of persons receiving foreign funding were introduced by the Kazakh authorities last year. The government then said the event was aimed at “increasing the confidence level of citizens.”
It was previously reported that the Russian Federation is trying to recruit residents of Kazakhstan for the war in Ukraine.
