Zelensky is scheduled to meet with Biden on Thursday afternoon after speaking to Congress and meeting with US military officials
The White House has asked Congress to approve additional funding to support Ukraine. Reuters reported this on Wednesday, September 20, citing White House spokesman John Kirby.
“This is a really critical time as we approach the fall. It’s very important that we get this additional tranche,” Kirby said, adding that the White House has encouraged Zelensky to meet with US lawmakers to make his case for with continued support for the military, given what some politicians say is protest.
Kirby emphasized the importance of aid now and noted that if Russian President Vladimir Putin was allowed to take control of Ukraine and advance on NATO’s borders, the price would be “significantly higher.”
“If you think the cost of supporting Ukraine is high now, just think how much higher it would be in blood and treasure if we just go ahead and let him take over Ukraine. Then the cost of protecting sovereign integrity and territory, believe me you to me, will be much more expensive and, the blood of Americans may be consumed,” he said.
Kirby added that US President Joe Biden expects to meet with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to get information from him about the prospects for the situation ahead. This will be the leaders’ sixth personal meeting and Zelensky’s third visit to the White House.
As we have already written, the offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has been ongoing since the beginning of June. During this time, we were able to free up more than 240 square meters. km of territory in Zaporozhye and Donetsk regions.
The US Defense Intelligence Agency has assessed the possibility of the Ukrainian army breaking through the Russian defense lines by the end of this year.
