Ursula von der Leyen believes that if the Ukrainian state can maintain this pace in implementing reforms, this will be a decisive moment.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed surprise at the progress Ukraine has made in implementing reforms needed for its bid to join the EU. He said this in an interview with the Bloomberg news agency, published on Wednesday, September 20.
“If they continue the momentum – and I see that they are fully motivated – this will be a decisive moment,” the European official stressed.
Ursula von der Leyen earlier, speaking on September 13 in the European Parliament, called for Ukraine to be admitted to the EU. He called this expansion an important decision for the bloc.
“The future of Ukraine is in our Union,” he said.
The head of the European Commission did not rule out changing the EU treaty if necessary.
Media said Ursula von der Leyen told EU ambassadors in September that the bloc needs to expand its borders to recognize new geopolitical realities.
Ukraine and Moldova need to be granted membership to prevent them from falling under the influence of countries that do not share the bloc’s values, von der Leyen emphasized.
Let us remind you that the European Union plans to hold a meeting of foreign ministers of member countries in Kyiv.
It was also previously reported that Ukraine will hold negotiations with Hungary and Romania to unblock EU accession negotiations. In particular, the issue of education in the languages of national minorities in Ukrainian schools will be discussed.
