Ukraine decided to take such steps to convince Warsaw to back down and agree to a grain trade licensing mechanism developed in cooperation with the European Union.
In the coming days, Ukraine will introduce an embargo on onions, tomatoes, cabbage and apples from Poland. Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka on Tuesday, September 19, explained this decision in a comment to the Polish publication Rzeczpospolita.
According to Kachka, after five months of negotiations, Ukraine has lost hope of solving the issues surrounding Ukrainian agricultural products. That’s why on September 18, the government of Ukraine filed a case with the World Trade Organization against Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. So far the government of Ukraine has not received a response from Poland.
“The main reason for us is to prove that Poland has no right to introduce such measures. From the very beginning we did not agree to an export ban. It is important for us to move in the right direction, which means talks with the European Commission as an institution, which is responsible for international trade. We also have a coordination platform. Poland is involved in this process, so we have a reasonable expectation that the expiration of the grain export ban, including the measures introduced by Ukraine, will be accepted by all member countries. So “, this case is not directed against Poland. We are discussing the possibility of applying such measures,” Kaczka said.
He added that Ukraine decided to take the step of imposing a ban on onions, tomatoes, cabbage and apples from Poland to convince Warsaw to back down and agree to a grain trade licensing mechanism developed in cooperation in the European Union, for which Ukraine will be responsible.
Kachka emphasized that Kyiv’s efforts are not aimed at worsening relations with Poland, but at developing civilized methods for resolving disputes.
Let’s remember that President Andrzej Duda compared Ukraine to a dangerous drowning man. He said his country wants to help Ukraine, but it must defend the interests of its own farmers.
As reported, Ukraine filed a case at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against three Eastern European countries that unilaterally extended the grain import ban, despite the fact that the European Commission lifted the restrictive measures . In turn, Poland withdrew from the grain platform from Ukraine and will stop helping Ukrainian refugees.
