The European Commission is waiting for steps from Kyiv to control grain exports and insists on a compromise

The European Commission said that they expect Kyiv to take steps to introduce control over its agricultural exports and insist on a compromise on resolving the agricultural dispute.

European Commission press secretary Miriam Garcia Ferrer stated this in Brussels, as European Pravda reports.

The agreement that we have with Ukraine now is that they will introduce a system for export controls in the next 30 days, but also (that they) are ready from September 16, that is, from Saturday until some concrete actions to ensure that there will be an increase in exports of these products to the EU. We will have another coordination platform meeting this evening where we will discuss this and where Ukraine will present the measures it has taken and its action plan,” Ferrer said.

On Friday, the European Commission announced that it will not continue the ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine after September 15, provided that Kyiv takes measures to limit imports on its part.

However, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia decided to introduce restrictions unilaterally, and therefore Kiev announced that it would file a lawsuit against these countries in the WTO due to their refusal to lift the ban on Ukrainian agricultural products. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade of Ukraine Taras Kachka.

On September 15, the European Union lifted a ban on the export of wheat, barley, rapeseed and sunflower seeds from Ukraine to Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria, imposed on May 2, after Ukraine promised to take measures to strengthen export controls to neighboring countries.

On the same day, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia introduced a unilateral ban on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products, explaining this by the need to protect their farmers from a wave of Ukrainian agricultural products, which resulted in lower prices.

It is important to prove that these actions are legally unlawful. And so tomorrow we will begin the trial,” Kaczka said on Sunday, adding that Kyiv is preparing to take retaliatory measures against Polish exports of fruits and vegetables.

In our opinion, these measures by Hungary and Poland are a statement of total distrust in the European Commission, Kaczka noted, adding that the restrictions imposed by Poland will affect a significant part of Ukrainian exports.

We will be forced to retaliate against additional products and will ban the import of fruits and vegetables from Poland, warned the trade representative of Ukraine.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said he will meet with Vladimir Zelensky in New York in the coming days. The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

One of the key topics of the meeting will be the issue of grain. Poland is the main transit country for Ukrainian grain, but Duda said that the country is not interested in Ukrainian grain being sold on the Polish market.

We must protect our own market, and we do this while trying to help Ukraine. Ukraine needs to understand our position,” Duda said.
