NATO must prepare for a long war in Ukraine.

    .

This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with the German media group Funke, published on September 17.

He believes that “most wars last longer than expected when they started,” so the Alliance must prepare for a long war in Ukraine.

We all strive for a fast world. At the same time, we must realize: if President Zelensky and the Ukrainians stop fighting, their country will cease to exist. If President Putin and Russia lay down their arms, we will have peace,” the Secretary General expressed this opinion not for the first time.

In addition, Stoltenberg noted that after the end of the war, Ukraine should receive security guarantees so that Russian aggression against it does not happen again:

The peace agreement should not serve as a respite for Russia to attack again. We can no longer allow Russia to jeopardize security in Europe.

At the same time, Stoltenberg added that “there is no doubt that Ukraine will eventually be in NATO.”

At the same time, he did not name the exact timing of the country’s entry into the alliance. At the July NATO summit in Vilnius, Ukraine, contrary to expectations, did not receive an invitation to join the alliance. At the same time, the declaration signed at the end of the summit stated that the G7 countries undertake to ensure the defense capability and security of Ukraine on the basis of long-term bilateral agreements.

Speaking about the growing costs of European countries for the supply of weapons to Ukraine, Stoltenberg said:

During the Cold War, under Konrad Adenauer or Willy Brandt, defense spending accounted for three to four percent of economic output.

We did it then, and we must do it again today,” he urged, noting that in his home country of Norway, defense spending has fallen short of the 2% target committed by NATO member states.

Stoltenberg added that during his years as head of the Norwegian government, he realized “how difficult it is to allocate more money to defense when higher spending on health, education or infrastructure is needed.”
