Mexican security forces detained Ovidio Guzman in January after a violent shootout in the city of Culiacan.
The Mexican government has officially released Ovidio Guzman, the son of jailed drug lord Joaquin Guzman, known as El Chapo (Corotun), to US law enforcement agencies. Reuters reported this yesterday.
“Ovidio Guzman, the son of jailed Mexican drug lord El Chapo Guzman, was extradited to the United States on Friday to face suspicions of trafficking fentanyl,” the report said.
US Attorney General Merick Garland said that the extradition of Guzman Jr. is “the latest step in America’s effort to crack down on ‘every facet’ of the drug-smuggling operations of the Sinaloa Cartel, which has long been linked to the Guzman family.”
As you know, in January of this year, Mexican security forces detained Ovidio Guzman after a fierce shootout in the city of Culiacan in the northern state of Sinaloa, where his father’s powerful drug empire is based in long time. The arrest sparked a wave of violence that killed dozens of people.
El Chapo himself, who is the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, was extradited to the United States in 2017. He received a life sentence in a maximum security Supermax prison in Colorado.
