US President Joe Biden appointed Penny Pritzker as US Special Representative for Ukraine’s Economic Recovery.
Ukraine will have a special US representative for economic recovery. Penny Pritzker will work with the government of Ukraine, international partners and the private sector to accelerate our country’s economic transformation, said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Who is Pritzker and what will he do in Ukraine?
Ukrainian diaspora
Pritzker is a former US Secretary of Commerce; he served in this post throughout President Obama’s second term. Penny is a member of the influential Pritzker immigrant family, one of the richest families in the United States with a combined fortune of $37 billion. The fortune of the special representative himself is more than $3 billion.
The Pritzkers are also known for their civic position and philanthropy. More than 100 years ago they immigrated to the United States from Ukraine. The village of Velikie Pritski in the south of the Kiev region was named precisely because of Penny Pritsker’s ancestors. And even though the Pritzkers are a Jewish family, they actively participate in the life of the Ukrainian diaspora.
Distribute the billions
On June 21, Antony Blinken announced that the United States would provide more than $1.3 billion for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
“As Special Envoy, Pritzker will bring decades of experience and expertise to this position. In collaboration with the Ukrainian authorities, our allies and partners, international financial institutions and the private sector, he will drive the US efforts to rebuild Ukraine’s economy include mobilizing public and private investment, prioritizing donors, and working to reopen export markets and businesses closed due to barbaric attacks and destruction of Russia,” said US President Joe Biden.
Pritzker will also work with Ukraine’s other international partners, including through the G7 coordination platform, to ensure that the actions of different countries complement and reinforce each other.
“Special Representative Pritzker will help the government of Ukraine implement the reforms needed to strengthen the economy, and will work with Ukraine to help ensure that as Ukraine begins to recover, it comes back stronger,” Biden said.
Pritzker himself openly said that now, in order to receive American money, the government of Ukraine has to fulfill certain conditions.
“There will be a separate focus on reforms related to transparency and accountability of recovery – changes in the regulatory environment, law enforcement agencies, the judicial system, in the fight against corruption, management of state-owned enterprises, etc.,” notes the newly appointed US special envoy.
