Ukraine can join the ranks of the North Atlantic Alliance before the end of the war against Russia, but this requires the consent of the allies. At the same time, NATO countries are worried that they will have to send their troops to the front lines. This opinion was expressed in an interview with Radio Liberty by the US State Department’s special representative for Ukraine in 2017-2019, Kurt Volker.

He added that Article 5 of the NATO Treaty is “a big field for discussion” because it does not indicate what response to aggression should be given by members of the military-political bloc. For example, Volker cited the only time the application of Art. 5 – 2001 terrorist attack in the USA. The former special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine added that NATO did not enter the war then.
If we are thoughtful people, we can talk together with NATO countries and Ukraine and find out what Article 5 means for Ukraine,” Volker said.
He also spoke about the advisability of replacing the Minister of Defense during a war, why the West is hinting at holding elections to Ukraine, and whether one should count how much one day of war costs.
