Ukraine should be in NATO and the European Union. This was stated by ex-NATO Secretary General, professor of international politics at Leiden University Jaap de Goop Scheffer, speaking to students in The Hague.

Democracies are always suffocating, they lack air. Elections every four years, every five years. And what now seems simple and important can become a big challenge for President Zelensky, as well as our politicians in the Netherlands and other countries – how to maintain solidarity with Ukraine… The next challenge for Zelensky is Ukraine’s entry into the European-Atlantic family. And this is not an easy task. In my opinion, in the end, Ukraine should be in NATO and the European Union,” says Scheffer.
At the same time, the former Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance indicated that at the moment he cannot be so optimistic about the existence of full agreement on the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO. According to him, it is now important that allies in the military-political bloc begin to think about guarantees for Ukraine on the path to NATO membership.
The European Union should not now make the same mistake that NATO made in 2008 – let me remind you that Ukraine became a candidate for EU membership last year. Let’s be honest or the EU will be able to fulfill its obligations, will we not again make a promise that we cannot keep. And what I’m talking about now looks easy, but is very difficult – Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. This is partly due to the fact that Western Balkan countries are knocking on the doors of NATO and the EU and waiting to be accepted. This is one of the biggest challenges,” he said.
The speech of the former NATO Secretary General demonstrates the evolution that the political thought of Europe and the Western world has undergone over the past decade.
