Among the priorities of the European Commission is the continued support and provision of the necessary tools for the criminal justice sector in Ukraine, its further development in accordance with European standards.
The European Union is willing to participate in financing the costs of creating an international Register of Losses and ordering premises for this institution in The Hague. This was announced by the European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, writes Ukrinform.
“Together with the Council of Europe and other partners, we are committed to ensuring meaningful processes for the payment of compensations for the losses that Russia caused to the citizens of Ukraine during the war. I am pleased to announce that the EU will be involved in recovering the necessary costs for the establishment of the Damage Register, in particular the ordering of the appropriate places in The Hague and the development of the corresponding digital platform,” emphasized the European Commissioner.
He noted that the EU views the creation of an international Register Damage as an important first step towards the creation of a future international instrument for the payment of financial compensation for Ukraine and looks forward to a potential change and expansion of EU status as a participant in the Damage Register.
Reynders noted the important role of the Council of Europe in holding the Russian Federation accountable for crimes in Ukraine and called the relevant decisions of the summit of the Council of Europe in Reykjavik in May of this year “historic”.
Due to the unprecedented scale of international support for Ukraine, the EU is reportedly making efforts to coordinate all international initiatives to hold Russia accountable. To this end, the EU, together with Ukraine, the ICC and the Danish government, established a Dialogue Group, which already includes more than three dozen countries, regional and international institutions.
Among the priorities of the European Commission is the continued support and provision of the necessary tools for the criminal justice sector in Ukraine, its further development in accordance with European standards. The EU relies on the effective support of the Council of Europe for this work.
